Topher’s Top 10 of 2022: Books
Unlike some of my other Best Of lists from 2022, the books list does not discriminate based on publication date. There are simply too many books I’d be interested to read and too little time to get them all read. My reading goal in 2022 was to read 36 books, a modest increase from the 35 I managed in 2021. I blew through this goal, landing somewhere around 42 for the year. It’s amazing what not teaching will do to free up mental space and time.
10. The Peacekeeper by B.L. Blanchard (2022)
I’ve been part of Amazon’s Kindle First program since its inception. Even though Amazon is a professional nemesis of mine, they feel entirely inescapable from the perspective of a reader and a writer. The books offered in this program vary widely in terms of quality and content, and most aren’t worth discussing. Not so with The Peacekeeper. This book is, at its heart, a mystery centering on the secrets family and close communities keep to protect each other and themselves. The coolest part of this book is its hook: it’s an alternate history, set in a North America that was never colonized. The main character of this story is Ojibwe, and a sizable chunk of the book takes place in Shikaakwa, my new home city of…
