January 2023 Wrap Up

Howdy!

I had big dreams for January that just didn’t come to fruition. Whoever decided that the year–and therefore our lives–should reset in the middle of winter is a sadistic fuck. Everything really went off the rails mid-month when my partner went to Disney World and brought us back COVID as a souvenir. I’m happy to report that my second infection was just as mild as the first–I last had COVID in March 2020. I had a low-grade fever, some body aches, and a marked increase in sensitivity to pain. Lucky for me, I was fully recovered within a week.

The entire month of January felt like a liminal space, an entryway into something yet to be determined. It felt like hushed voices and waiting with bated breath. I wanted to make a lot of progress toward my goals, especially to get myself settled into a rhythm in my new environment and to put down roots in the neighborhood, but didn’t get too far on either.

Things in the country writ large have been little better than they were for me. It took fifteen votes to elect boring old Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. The war in Ukraine seems to be holding steady if not escalating. The internet is even more of a cesspool than it has ever been, and trans people continue to be in the crosshairs of state legislatures across the country.
